ABOUT YELLOW TENT

A note by our Founder - Deepthi Tanikella

The concept of a honeymoon was not a big deal in our families back in the '70s. You got married, visited the family temple, visited Tirupathi, came back home and well, got on with life.

So, back in the day, my dear Nana(dad) had planned a trip to Mysore with Amma, but little did he know it was going to turn into a babymoon. And by this time, both were elevated to the position of parents to my wonderful brother.

Nana being Nana went ahead and booked the train, hotels, etc. And when he came home to tell Amma the exciting news, he looked at her tummy and started laughing. In all this excitement he had actually forgotten that his wife was 7 months pregnant with yours truly!

But Amma being the sport that she is, said let's go. So, after handing over my brother to the grandparents, the folks boarded the train to Mysore. In Mysore, for the first day, Nana had booked a tour of the Mysore sandal soap factory. And as Amma walked in, the strong scent of sandalwood hit her and what happened next wasn't all that rosy. She puked the hell out and walked as far as she could get away from the scent. Clearly, the 7-month me, inside my Amma's tummy wasn't happy!

But a few years ago Vinod Chandramouli, Vivaswath Tanikella and I went on a trip to Mysore. I walked around those streets imagining what this would have felt like in the '70s. Thinking of the babymoon story that Amma told me a million times, smiling ear to ear.

I was first apprehensive and then happy, when someone in a small shop offered me the original and pure essential oil of sandalwood. I took a brave breath and smelled this - and it was glorious! I brought it back to Chennai, mixed it with some Melt and Pour soap base, and gifted it to Amma. And this time around, she did not throw up!

Now, that's how life came a full circle for me and my family. And that's exactly how the birth of Yellow Tent happened as well. From reminscing the flavours of the past, keeping close the flavours of home & handcrafting goodness for the future, today our hobby turns into a beautiful passion and we can't wait to show you our absloutely natural & organic line of soaps!

With love,

Deepthi Tanikella
